Washington University Access Guidelines: Debate 2004

In an effort to balance the sometimes conflicting needs and desires of the debate participants, the Commission on Presidential Debates, the campus community, our guests, and the larger community, these rules will apply to campus activities.

October 7-8, 2004

  • Only Washington University students, faculty, and staff with a University issued identification card; guests invited by the University's Chancellor or the Commission on Presidential Debates; members of the press issued credentials for the Debate; and police, security and emergency services officials may enter or remain on the University's Hilltop Campus (bounded by Skinker, Forsyth, Big Bend and Forest Park Parkway) or the South 40 Residential Campus (bounded by Forsyth, Wallace, Wydown and Big Bend). Members of the University community, guests and media may be required to show University identification.
  • Only Washington University students, faculty, authorized staff, and police and security officials may enter or remain on the University's residential campuses.   Any exceptions must be approved by the Director of Residential Life.

October 8, 2004

  • Only those persons who are properly credentialed may enter or remain in the secure perimeter surrounding the Athletic Center or at other times designated by the Chief of Police.
  • Individuals and groups may gather for the peaceful expression of views in a Public Viewing Area at the intramural field at the southeast corner of Big Bend and Forsyth, within sight of the Athletic Center at which the Debate will take place. Access to this area will be from Big Bend.
  • Parking on the campus will be significantly restricted and vehicle access will be limited to vehicles with a University issued or authorized parking permit. Members of the campus community are encouraged to carpool or take public transportation.
  • Hilltop campus employees who do not need to be on campus and can work from home should discuss that possibility with their supervisors.
