Approximately 175 students attended the memorial for Gov. Mel Carnahan, his son Roger and campaign advisor Chris Sifford on the steps of Brookings Hall.

Campus vigil for Gov. Mel Carnahan

Nearly 175 students expressed their sorrows in a late afternoon memorial vigil for Gov. Mel Carnahan, who was killed last night in a plane crash. The vigil took place on the front steps of Brookings Hall and was introduced by Ben Smilowitz, president of the College Democrats. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton also spoke at the vigil, and many students commented on Carnahan's support of education and employee rights among other things.

Students distribute ribbons for the vigil.

Following are some student remarks:

"Obviously it's a tragedy for the family and the people who knew the governor, and also a tragedy for the state and the nation too, because he, of course, was running for the Senate. I think it's sad that it may be no one will carry on the fight for the policies he believed in. This news has put a damper on things for me and pretty much everyone else around here."

"I think it's a tragedy in two senses. One, we've lost a wonderful politician and a wonderful man. I met him personally and I remember he went out of his way to talk to me. I also think it's a tragedy because it changes the tone of what's going on on campus -- the debate and all the activities planned around it."
