To Our Washington University Neighbors:

As you may know, on Tuesday, Oct. 17, Washington University will be hosting the third presidential debate of the 2000 campaign. We are honored to have been once again chosen to host this event and are pleased with the opportunity the debate will afford our students and the visibility it will give to the St. Louis region.

On Oct. 14-15, we will be leading group tours of the debate site. If you are interested, please call (314) 935-6679 for reservations.

Such an important event does not come without some difficulties and challenges, and we wanted to make you aware of issues relating to parking and traffic congestion. Because of the parking and security needs of the candidates, media, and others, we have arranged for additional parking at the Upper Muny parking lot in Forest Park. Shuttles will be available for those who park at the Muny lot. In addition, the intramural field near the southeast corner of Forsyth and Big Bend has been set aside as the designated public demonstration area.

On the day of the debate, local police and the Secret Service will close several streets surrounding the Hilltop Campus at varying times. The decision to close streets is made by those agencies. The campus itself will be open only to students, staff, faculty, and guests who have received a formal debate invitation.

For additional information about traffic pattern changes, particularly those streets in University City which exit onto Big Bend, please contact the University City Police Dept. at (314) 725-2211.

We hope you also will make use of the Debate hotline, (314) 935-0014, which provides current information you might find helpful. Thank you for your patience and indulgence during this exciting event.
