Members of the university community staff the Volunteer 5 telephone lines at KSDK-TV's downtown studio as part of the promotional effort for DebateWatch, designed to expand participation in presidential debates.
DebateWatch is sponsored by the nonpartisan, nonprofit Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). First introduced in 1996, DebateWatch brings citizens together nationally to watch the televised debates, talk about what they learn, and let the CPD know what they think through an anonymous survey. Candidates use debates to talk to the public. The public can use DebateWatch to talk to the candidates. Equally important, DebateWatch encourages citizens to talk with other citizens about the important electoral decisions they will make this fall. As in 1996, KSDK-TV (Channel 5, NBC) will serve as a communications partner with Washington University in St. Louis for DebateWatch. KSDK will air feature stories on DebateWatch 2000 and promote a call-in hotline for people interested in participating in the project, Oct. 2-6. The focus of the regional DebateWatch effort is on the Oct. 17 debate to be held at Washington University and scheduled to air locally at 8 p.m. CDT. For more information or to obtain the DebateWatch brochure, visit the CPD DebateWatch web site or call the Washington University DebateWatch hotline at (314) 935-7959.
